During the past two years, the June volunteer fieldwork opportunity graciously provided by the MTSU Archaeology Program’s summer field school at Castalian Springs, has been on hiatus(due to COVID). But now the field school is officially back and again welcomes volunteers to come by for a visit, take a tour, observe, and if desired, participate in excavating at the Castalian Springs mound site (AD 1200 – 1350) in Sumner County, TN. The field school is led by MTSU archaeologists Dr. Paul Eubanks and Dr. Kevin Smith. This summer, the project involves testing several possible mounds near the location of MTSU’s 2006-2011 excavations. The site is located at 150 Rock Springs Road in Castalian Springs,TN near the Wynnewood State Historic Site. There is parking available as soon as you enter the gate. Free and open to the public, weather permitting. Questions? Contact Paul.Eubanks@mtsu.edu
